Award-winning agronomist focuses on kickstarting crops

Queensland agronomist Aleasha Bertinazzi enjoys her role with Elders Toowoomba, advising broadacre growers about summer and winter cereal crops, such as sorghum, pulses, cotton and corn on the inner Darling Downs.

Aleasha’s dedication to the job and her clients, especially her advice involving practice change, has been acknowledged at the 6th Australian Summer Grains Conference with the Zoe McInnes Memorial Award, which recognises outstanding contribution to agronomic excellence.

“It was an honour just to be nominated. It’s great that the industry is recognising young agronomists,” Aleasha said.

“No two days are the same in this job. You’re constantly learning – the industry is always evolving which keeps you on your toes.

“Seeing the finished crop makes the hard days worth it!”

Aleasha said ‘starting off’ the crop has become a lot easier with the introduction of ClearStart® 22KZ, a high-efficiency liquid fertiliser that is gaining recognition for its effectiveness among Darling Downs farmers.

ClearStart products optimise available nutrients for early crop establishment and vigorous root development, even in dry conditions, and their efficiency means lower application rates, minimising application costs per hectare.

“We have enjoyed using ClearStart® 22KZ. Nothing compares to it as a kickstart product,” Aleasha said.

“We struggle to get good germination strikes some years on the heavy cracking clays, but with ClearStart the crops skyrocket out of the ground – they’re bright green and we achieve a good strike.”

Aleasha has also trialled Bio-Forge®, a formulation containing a unique combination of key nutrients to give crops the support they need to recover from stresses, like wind, frost, heat and hail, and initiate new vegetative and root growth.

“We’ve tested Bio-Forge with the ClearStart and it helped with stress mitigation when we were planting corn when temperatures were still cool,” she said.

“Another useful product is the biological, Utrisha® N, which we used for a client whose crop was lacking nitrogen. He hadn’t put in enough N up front, ran out of time and didn’t get the rainfall, so we applied Utrisha N because you don’t have to incorporate it in like urea.

“I think the difference in yield was around a quarter to half a tonne a hectare, and again it was like chalk and cheese. You could see the crop was taller, it had tillered more, underground and above ground it was just doing extraordinary things.”

When sprayed on and absorbed by the leaves of the crop, Utrisha N promotes the synthesis and absorption of nitrogen from the air, which makes the plant less reliant on drawing nitrogen from the soil and reduces the potential for fertiliser to leach into the soil.

While Aleasha said the Darling Downs is ‘a bit wet at the moment’, the crops are set up very well and hopefully will realise their full potential at harvest.

While her knowledge of farming started in her family’s horticulture business at Stanthorpe, Aleasha doesn’t anticipate leaving broadacre cropping any time soon.

“When I went to study at the University of New England, I didn’t think I would leave horticulture but then I discovered cotton and broadacre cropping. I thought ‘I’ll just do it for a few years and then I’ll go back to horticulture’, but I haven’t looked back!

“It really keeps you on your toes. There’s always a lot of research being done, and something new to learn about.”
